News: NSW Fair Trading has released the Tow truck operator self-audit checklist, use the checklist to check your tow truck business meets its obligations under the law.

Tow Truck Assessments are no longer required for registration in NSW.

On the 18th November 2022, rule 294–3(c)(ii) was repealed removing the requirement to obtain a Transport for NSW Tow Truck Assessment for NSW registration of a tow truck.

Tow trucks establishing registration in NSW need only obtain a HVAIS establishment of registration inspection report (commonly referred to as a “brown slip”).

Tow trucks must comply with the provisions of ADR 44 where applicable and be certified to show compliance with Section T of Vehicle Standards Bulletin 6 as published by the National Heavy Vehicle Regulator.

Procedure

For the purpose of registration, a tow truck is a vehicle used to tow vehicles which has fitted to its rear, an apparatus to lift a vehicle partially clear of the ground and maintain the vehicle in such a position while towing.

Tow trucks that are licensed by Fair Trading must undergo a HVIS inspection by the NHVR annually for renewal of their registration. Tow Trucks that are licensed by Fair Trading will display distinctive 'TT' or 'TTT' number plates.
