Berrigan and Greater Hume property testing

NSW Fair Trading is offering the communities of Berrigan and Greater Hume a final opportunity for free testing for loose-fill asbestos insulation. The one-off registration period is 4 weeks from 31 July to 25 August 2017.

If you are the owner of a pre-1980s residential property in one of these Council areas and missed out on registering for free testing in 2016, you may be eligible to register for this free testing.

Frequently asked questions

Frequently asked questions

Why is free testing for loose-fill asbestos insulation being re-opened in Berrigan and Greater Hume Shire Council areas?

The Greater Hume and Berrigan local government areas are the most impacted communities, based on population and number of dwellings, in the NSW Government’s loose-fill asbestos Voluntary Purchase and Demolition Program (the Program). Since the registration period closed on 1 August 2016, NSW Fair Trading has received feedback that some residents of these areas did not register for the free sample testing as they were uncertain about the impact of the Program. Due to the likelihood of more homes in these areas being affected by loose-fill asbestos insulation, the NSW Government is now offering an additional opportunity for homeowners in these areas to participate in the Program.

Why do properties containing loose-fill asbestos insulation need to be demolished?

Loose-fill asbestos was installed as insulation, but over time, airborne fibres can move from the ceiling into the living spaces.

The NSW Government, with input from a range of experts, has determined that demolition and comprehensive site remediation is the best way to safely remove loose-fill asbestos from our community.
