The NSW Government established the Voluntary Purchase and Demolition Program and its associated assistance package to provide safety, certainty and support for NSW residents.
Under the Program, owners have options available to them, including the NSW Government purchasing their home at market value as if it wasn’t affected by loose-fill asbestos. The affected property will then be demolished and the land remediated.
Refer to the Loose-fill Asbestos Insulation Voluntary Purchase and Demolition Program Process flowchart (PDF size: 744kb) for more information.
A number of new laws have been introduced to ensure disclosure of properties affected by loose-fill asbestos insulation and to protect residents, workers and communities.
These include establishing a Loose-fill Asbestos Insulation Register, mandatory tagging of properties that appear on the register, disclosures on Section 149 Certificates, and property transaction notifications.
The impact of loose-fill asbestos insulation is not only on homeowners and tenants of affected properties, but also neighbours and the wider local community.
The NSW Government is working closely with neighbours and communities as the program is delivered.
Visit the information for the community page for more details.
Extensive sample testing of pre-1980s residential properties is being conducted in 28 Local Government Areas. If you registered your home, check on the property testing results in your local area.
If you did not register for free sample testing and are concerned that your property may be affected by loose-fill asbestos insulation, visit the testing for loose-fill asbestos page to find out more about arranging your own test.
Homeowners with properties that are confirmed as affected by loose-fill asbestos insulation through private testing should contact Fair Trading immediately. Consideration will be given to include the property in the Program. This option is available until 31 July 2017.
