'Use by' dates

Most pre-packed food in NSW is required to have some form of 'use by' or 'best by' labelling. It is the responsibility of retailers to ensure that any food sold is not contaminated and is fit for consumption - see Quality of food products section below.

The Australia New Zealand Food Standards Code includes requirements governing 'use-by-dates'.

Enquiries relating to consumer rights and refunds are dealt with by the NSW Office of Fair Trading. Traders have an obligation to sell items fit for the purpose intended and consumers seeking redress can, in the first instance, approach the trader. If unsuccessful, a complaint may be lodged with the Office of Fair Trading.
