Shopping tips

Here are some tips to help you have a hassle-free shopping experience:

  • Shop around and compare prices.
  • Keep your receipts in a safe place for refund and warranty purposes.
  • Check the seller’s refund policy before you buy anything.
  • Shopping online – use only reputable sellers and sites. Beware of scams.
  • Buying products from overseas – always check if the manufacturer has service arrangements in Australia. You don’t want to get stuck with a faulty product and no-one local to fix it.
  • Think twice before paying a deposit as a trader may keep all or part of it if you change your mind.
  • Ensure toys you buy for children are appropriate and safe for their age.
  • Pay with cash or use lay-bys rather than credit. Then you pay no interest and the goods will cost you less.
  • Remember, interest free deals are not cost free - you still will have to pay ongoing fees.

Consumer guarantees

When you buy an item you are automatically covered by a set of legally binding consumer guarantees.  They entitle you to ask for a refund, repair or replacement if the product:

  • is not of acceptable quality
  • does not match the description
  • does not match the sample or demonstration model shown to you.

A warranty is a voluntary promise offered by the person or business who sold the goods, or who made the goods. If a warranty is offered it must be honoured by the seller or manufacturer.

A warranty does not replace any of the consumer guarantees.

Extended warranties

Before paying extra for an extended warranty, make sure you read the fine print and check the extended warranty’s terms, conditions and exclusions. Extended warranties may not always be good value for money and do not replace the consumer guarantees.

Credit cards

Check your credit card statements carefully and make sure only the things you have bought have been charged to you. Always pay your credit card balance in full or pay more than the minimum amount stated on the credit card statement to pay off the debt quicker and pay less interest.
